The Music of Steve Klink and his Trio
There is a musical world that finds its source in the most unlikely of places: America’s Midwest, where the roots of American music combine in unexpected ways — folk ballads, soulful blues, crunchy swing and gospel shouts. With his homed songwriting sensibility Steve Klink combines these musical sources to create magical melodies, then arranges them in the vocabulary of hardbop and the respective trios of that era: Ahmad Jamal, Gene Harris and Les McCann. The results are hundreds of finely crafted recordings he has written, each beautiful in its own right. But taken together, the body of work Steve Klink has written, recorded and performed over the years forms a wide-ranging pastiche, a panorama of song stories about life, love and longing.

Steve Klink, Pianist, Komponist und Arrangeur ist geboren und aufgewachsen im Bundesstaat Iowa im Mittleren Westen der USA. Hier liegen seine musikalischen Wurzeln. Folk, Blues, Gospel und Soul bestimmen das Wesen seiner Kompositionen und seines Klavierspiels.
Nach dem Kompositionsstudium am New England Conservatory in Boston lebte Steve für einige Jahre in Köln. In dieser Zeit produzierte er u.a. 4 CDs mit seinem Trio – eine Band, die auf ein mittlerweile 20jähriges Bestehen zurückblicken kann. Die drei Musiker verstehen sich blind.

»Predvsem sem hotel glasbo popeljati nazaj, vse do mojih korenin,« je Steve Klink, v Sloveniji znan predvsem kot soprog in glasbeni partner pevke Mie Žnidarič, pred kratkim povedal novinarju med pogovorom o svojem novem in dolgo pričakovanem albumu Trilogy in Blue. Nadarjeni pianist in skladatelj je odraščal v osrčju Amerike in njegova globoka predanost ter ljubezen do glasbe žarita iz vsakega tona, ki ga izvabi iz črno-belih tipk. »Ameriški srednji vzhod je prav poseben prostor. V nasprotju z ustaljenimi trendi zasičenih jazzovskih krogov ameriških velemest so tod, ko sem odraščal, prevladovali folk, blues, gospel, bluegrass, soul in nezamejena prostranost.«
Po študiju kompozicije in jazzovskega klavirja na šoli New England Conservatory v Bostonu je Steve lep čas živel v nemškem Kölnu. V tem času je ustvaril in produciral štiri albume s svojim triom – s skupino, ki se lahko ozre na dobri dve desetletji skupnega igranja glasbe: več kot dvajset let že namreč igrajo skupaj, vsak za svojim inštrumentom dihajo kot eno in se glasbeno izvrstno dopolnjujejo ter so tako širom po Evropi odigrali že na stotine koncertov.
Raznolikost izvirne glasbe na albumu Trilogy in Blue je presenetljiva. Vsaka skladba je svoj lasten glasbeni svet, zajet v jedrnat aranžma, nekako tako, kot kantavtor piše svoje skladbe. Klavirski trio z Marcusom Rieckom na bobnih in Volkerjem Heinzom na kontrabasu je podlaga, na katerem je zgrajen vsak od teh svetov.
